sometimes you can find premade layouts that hide top friends. I had one at one time that hid my top friends. I got the layout from hotfreelayouts.com

it not only lets you hide your top, but if you just want one top friend or two or three, you can use those. you can also change the name of your top friends to whatever you want. and you can hide the view all or leave it, hide the comments, or leave 'em.... a few choices there.
